Our History
The Roanoke Arts Council was established in 2008 to encourage greater appreciation for the fine arts in the greater Roanoke community. To date, eleven annual events have been staged by the organization. A Renaissance in Roanoke, an outdoor, juried art show and sale, brought more than 50 artists. They were joined by a Plein Air competition for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students from Roanoke Elementary School and an open Plein Air competition. In all, well over 100 artists competed in all the events. Entertainment has varied and each year children’s art activities were provided. A Farmers’ Market and Food Court are also provided. The events have been well attended. In 2018 a juried craft area was added to the event which proved to be a big success.
Mission
The mission of the Roanoke Arts Council is to enrich the cultural lives of the people in the greater Roanoke area by nurturing and supporting excellence in the arts; promoting, presenting and encouraging educational activities; and increasing the communities’ awareness and appreciation for the arts.
Historic Main Street, in downtown Roanoke, will be filled with artisan booths showcasing a variety of original works of art by regional artists. Each year the committee strives to showcase an artisan or two with live demonstrations of their particular medium to provide the public with a snapshot view into their world of creativity.
